Literary Afternoon Tea with the Stars
June 20, 2014

St. Kevin’s Catholic School at Dee Why held a literary afternoon tea with the stars last week when seven authors and illustrators dropped in.

They included children’s author Belinda Murrell, illustrator of the Saurus Street series, Tony Flowers, Nathal Luff, Oliver Phommavanh, Susanne Gervay and Toni Brisland of the Demichat series.

Teacher-librarian at the school Kirsty O’Rourke said it was a wonderful afternoon which saw great engagement from the children.

“The children are still excited”, she said, one day after the event. “Oliver Phammavanh was particularly popular amongst the older children, especially as he was also a teacher and a comedian.” Amongst the younger children Murrell was a favourite with her Lulu Bell series.

“St. Kevin’s is a diverse school culturally with 140 students making up 25 nationalities” she said and “Susanne Gervey commented how impressed she was by the children’s discussion of the stories”

Authors had been visiting schools as part of a program by the Northern Suburbs Children’s Book Council and the fire has indeed been lit for the St. Kevin’s students to begin their own literary journeys.
